|  Agricultural heritage of the Cranberry Isles Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Research, Jessica Duma, 2014-2016 while an Island Institute Fellow at GCIHS which produced an exhibition, presentations, video, and oral history recordings. Historical and modern day materials pertaining to Duma's Agricultural Heritage of the Cranberry Isles fellowship focusing on farming, agriculture, apples, the Island Ecology project, farm stand, and more in the Town of Cranberry Isles from 19th century to present. Duma worked with mentor Todd Little-Siebold (College of the Atlantic) and used GCIHS and other local historical collections to produce an exhibition, gather oral histories, and record videos of her experiences and research while residing on Great Cranberry Island as a two-year fellow and then served as part-time manager of GCIHS and part-time manager for the CIRT (affordable housing) program for the last year. |  Richard 'Chuddy' Alley Interview Transcript Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Interview Transcript from an interview with Richard 'Chuddy' Alley. The interview was recorded in the 2000's (exact year unknown) by Jessi Duma and Jenny Matthews, who both lived on the island for a number of years. Chuddy came to GCI as a young boy, and recounts many memories of Great Cranberry in the early to mid 20th century. He talks about agriculture and fishing extensively with Jessi. He moved over to Islesford and his son Ricky Alley speaks about fishing with a fish trap, and Pursing. Jessi was a Cranberry Island Fellow and became the general manager for GCIHS for a few years. |  Nelson - Carl Nelson correspondence with a woman named Martha. Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Three letters from Carl Nelson to his friend Martha. In the first letter he is writing and just catching up with her about a mutual friend they had passing. In the second letter he is writing Martha thanking her for a jar of relish that she had sent him. In the top right corner he drew a picture of the jar that she sent. The letter starts by saying "How I can tell you how good the relish really is." He continues to write about how much he enjoyed the relish and how good it was. In the third letter he begins by saying " Dear 'Dickerson'" which is the name of Martha's relish mentioned in the second letter. Official #42664, Port Number 46 Built at Dipper Harbor, Saint John, New Brunswick 1861, launched 10 Sept 1861. Length: 82 ft, 2 tenths, Breadth: 23 feet, 6 tenths, Depth: 9 feet. Built by James Thomson Dipper Harbor County of Saint John, NB. Tonnage 106 tons, 62 tenths. Owners: James Thomson of Dipper Harbour, Mariner, 22 shares, Master of the ship. James Edwards Hamm of Carleton, Loader?, 21 shares. William Henry Harding of Carleton, Surveyor, 21 shares. The Alice T wrecked off the Cranberry Isles in a snow storm January 18, 1867 with a load of lumber. William P. Preble was likely the Surveyor of Wrecks for that year as he was for many years. |  Norwegian Navigation Chart 1807 Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Navigation Chart of Norway probably belonging to Sam Hadlock, Jr., with a faint, barely legible handwritten annotation in center. [Best guess at written note: "Fren Cape, Nsor 8am, point 21+ NorW, from Stan point, to Cape Jack(?) 21+, N(illegible symbols), Way-and give Sun, Point 1/2 mile -, From Cape Jack(?), to Cape George or, Cape Laieu(?) NW (and then some illegible letters)". A note attributed to "The Maine Islands in Story and Legend" by Dorothy Simpson says: "Capt. Samuel Hadlock in 1807, during Napoleonic wars, took load of fish to Spain, with good profit and returned with load of salt and lemons. He built a store on Little Cranberry. He built ships too, captained by his five sons. His third son was Samuel who lived on Great Cranberry....". Samuel Hadlock, Jr., built the 1826 house that became the Preble House. |  Nautical Chart of Ireland with annotations Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Nautical chart of Ireland, believed to be a chart Samuel Hadlock, Jr. used for his voyages to Europe while touring with Eskimos and sled dogs in 1820s. Chart appears to be a section of a larger chart. A note on reverse (probably by Douglas Macfarlan (donor's father)) states: "This old navigation map was found in a sea chest in the Preble House, Cranberry Isl. Maine in 1947." Samuel Hadlock built what became known as the Preble House for the woman he married while on his European tour. Zoom in to see various annotations on the chart. Many nun-buoys are marked in brownish/yellow, and there are several pencil annotations made along the coastline. This chart was scanned at Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) in 2016. A framed print of the full size NEDCC scan hangs in the Macfarlan/Preble house.
